Decorating A Rental Apartment Without Making Permanent Changes

October 10, 20234 min read

Decorating your rental apartment can be a lot of fun, but it can also be challenging, especially if you're not allowed to make any permanent changes. Even though many mid-term rentals come fully furnished, you may find one that’s partially furnished, unfurnished, or doesn’t make your décor style.

No need to worry, since there are many ways to add your own personal touch to your space without damaging the property–even if it’s just for a few months.

Wallpaper and wall decals

Removable wallpaper and wall decals are a great way to add color and pattern to your walls without having to paint. Make sure that you choose removable products that won't damage the walls when you take them down.

Apply the wallpaper by simply peeling the backing off, sticking it to the wall, and removing it using the same process.. These will leave your rental units walls intact and clean.

Hang Up Some Art

You can hang artwork and photos using damage-free picture hanging strips.  That way, you won’t need to put any holes or harmful adhesives on the walls.

Creative Floor Decor

Rugs and carpets are a great way to add warmth and style to your space with the additional benefit of protecting the floors from wear and tear. When choosing rugs and carpets for your rental apartment, buy something durable. And if you choose rugs and carpets that are light in color, your space will feel larger and brighter.

Movable Furniture

If you’re moving into an unfurnished or partially furnished mid-term rental, make sure you use furniture that’s easy to install and move. It makes moving so much easier, and you won’t have to worry about damaging the walls and floors.

Use Nature

Plants are a great way to add life and color to your space. They can also help to purify the air and improve your mood. When choosing plants for your rental apartment, be sure to choose plants that are low-maintenance and easy to care for.

Some good low-maintenance plants for rental apartments include:

  • Snake plants

  • Pothos

  • ZZ plants

  • Spider plants

  • Air plants

Mirrors

Mirrors are a great way to reflect light and make your space feel larger. When choosing mirrors for your rental apartment, choose mirrors that are different sizes and shapes. This will create a more visually interesting space.

Consider placing mirrors strategically to reflect light from natural and artificial sources. For example, you could place a mirror across from a window to reflect the natural light.

Pillows and Blankets

Throw pillows and blankets are a great way to add comfort and style to your sofa and bed. They can also be used to add pops of color and pattern to your space.

When choosing throw pillows and blankets, be sure to choose products that are made of durable materials. You may also want to choose throw pillows and blankets that are washable so that you can easily keep them clean.

Light Up The Space

Lighting can have a big impact on the atmosphere of your space. For example, bright overhead lighting can create a sterile and uninviting atmosphere, while soft accent lighting can create a warmer and inviting atmosphere.

When choosing lighting for your rental apartment, ensure that you choose a variety of light sources. This will allow you to create different atmospheres in your space depending on your needs.

For example, you could use bright overhead lighting when you need to work or study, and you could use soft accent lighting when you want to relax and unwind.

Decor On A Budget

If you’re on a budget consider the following options:

  • Shop at thrift stores and bargain stores like Ross. You can find some great deals on furniture, décor, and artwork at thrift stores and flea markets.

  • Find items online.  There’s plenty of inexpensive items that people are selling just to get rid off on the Facebook Marketplace and apps like OfferUp.

  • Make your own décor. There are several DIY projects that you can do to create your own unique décor. For example, you could make your own throw pillows, blankets, curtains, or even wall art.

  • Upcycle old furniture. If you have old furniture that you're not using, you can upcycle it to give it a new purpose. For example, you could turn an old coffee table into a nightstand or an old dresser into a TV stand.

  • Get creative with your storage solutions. Storage can be a challenge in small spaces, but there are a number of creative ways to store your belongings without sacrificing style. For instance, you could use baskets and bins to store your belongings under your bed or in your closet.

By following these tips, you can decorate your mid-term rental apartment without making any permanent changes. This way, you can create a space that feels like home without breaking the bank or damaging the property.
